Seldom has the battle of the sexes been so wittily portrayed. This 1971 classic by Gerald Arpino opens with a man and a woman in their respective corners of a boxing ring. The ensuing skirmish topples not only the contenders but the contrabassist who performs Jacob Druckman’s droll scoreat his increasing perilonstage. (Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s principal bassist, Joseph Guastefeste, serves as the musician and referee in this favorite of the repertoire.)
