Set to the music of The Beach Boys, Deuce Coupe features a lone ballerina who works through the complete classical ballet techniques while a large cast of dancers whirl around her in a mix of modern dance and the social dances of 1960s and 70s.

Twyla Tharp is now internationally known for her Broadway hit, Movin’ Out, as well as her choreography for the motion pictures “Hair,” “Ragtime” and “White Nights.” She has created ballets for companies around the world. In 1973, before any of these creations, Tharp was invited by Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino to create a new work for The Joffrey – her first ever for a ballet company. That work, Deuce Coupe, was groundbreaking in it’s juxtaposition of classical and Tharp’s quirky loose-limbed dance technique and the free-form dances of the sixties and seventies. Set to the music of The Beach Boys, Deuce Coupe is lively, fun and considered a masterpiece of late 20th century choreography.
