Created by Robert Joffrey in 1988, the Nutcracker has quickly become a Chicago holiday favorite. Joffrey’s Nutcracker differs from many other interpretations of the Tchaikovsky masterpiece in its setting: the ballet is set in Victorian-era America before transporting audiences to the lovely Land of Snow and the energetic Kingdom of Sweets.
The spectacular dancers from the Company are accompanied by local children’s choruses and by over 120 young dancers from throughout the Chicagoland area. With selected choreography by Gerald Arpino, the Nutcracker is sure to delight and amaze children of all ages (and adults alike) with its incomparable dancing as well as its sumptuous scenery and costumes.
