Each year The
Joffrey Ballet of Chicago holds auditions for children’s parts in its
annual production of The Nutcracker. Children are eligible to audition if
they are between the ages of 9-14 years old. They must be no smaller than
4 feet and no taller than 5 feet.
No fee is
charged for either the audition or for being a member of the children’s
cast. There is no costume
fee. Children are given a choice of providing their own ballet shoes for
performances or borrowing a pair from The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. They
are asked, however, to provide their own tights, leotards and makeup.
This year the
children begin rehearsing the first week in October. Most rehearsals are
scheduled on weekends, but there will also be some weekday, after school
rehearsals. During the week before the production opens, a few rehearsals
during school hours will take place. We try to keep these to a minimum.
Children chosen
to perform must be able to attend all scheduled rehearsals and be
available for all Nutcracker performances. This year The Nutcracker opens
on Thursday, November 30, 2000 for 35 performances. There is a matinee on
December 24, but no performance on Christmas Day. The final performance is
on Saturday, December 30. Because there are so many performances, most of
the roles will be double-cast.
The children
dance a variety of parts. The professional dancers of The Joffrey Ballet
of Chicago will dance the role of Clara. None of the children dance in
pointe shoes.
