Each year The Joffrey Ballet holds auditions for more than 120 children to dance in its annual production of Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker. Children are eligible to audition if they are between the ages of 9-14 years old. They must be no smaller than 4 feet and no taller than 5 feet.
Children will learn at the audition whether they have been cast in The Nutcracker. There are no “call backs.”
Children are, of course, chosen for the cast because of their talent. But there are other reasons, including size, that enter into the decision.
No fee is charged for either the audition or for being a member of the children’s cast. There is no costume fee. They are asked, however, to provide their own tights, leotards, ballet shoes and makeup.
This year the children’s cast begins rehearsals on October 15, 2004. The children usually rehearse twice a week. While most rehearsals are scheduled on weekends, there are some, weekday, after school rehearsals. During the week before the production opens, a few rehearsals during school hours take place. We try to keep these to a minimum. Rehearsals take place at The Joffrey Ballet Studios at 218 S. Wabash. All performances are at the historic Auditorium Theatre on Congress Parkway between Michigan and Wabash.
Children chosen to perform must attend all scheduled rehearsals and be available for all performances.
The children dance a variety of roles. In Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker. Professional dancers of The Joffrey Ballet perform the role of Clara. None of the children dance in pointe shoes.
