Mark
Goldweber joined The Joffrey Ballet in 1977, after dancing with Joffrey II for
two years. Goldweber was awarded a
Ford Foundation scholarship to New York City’s School of American Ballet at the
age of 12 and was discovered by Robert Joffrey at the Southeast Regional Ballet
Festival in 1975.
Mr.
Goldweber’s first role with The Joffrey was the “Boy in Blue” lead
role in Frederick Ashton’s LES PATINEURS, which he later reprised on the PBS
television series “Dance in America.” During his time dancing with The Joffrey, Goldweber was in
the original cast of several Gerald Arpino ballets, including SUITE SAINT-SAENS, QUARTER TONES FOR MR. B,
JAMBOREE and LIGHT RAIN. Robert
Joffrey created a solo for Goldweber in POSTCARDS, as well as the role of
“The Nutcracker” in his production of THE NUTCRACKER.
Born
in Miami, Florida, Goldweber began his ballet training with Thomas Armour, of
The Ballet Russe, and continued his studies with Mary Day in Washington D.C..
Throughout his career Mr. Goldweber worked with Robert Joffrey. Gerald
Arpino, Antony Tudor, Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor, and Laura
Dean
as well as numerous others. Mr.
Goldweber spent nine years as the Ballet Master of the Oregon Ballet Theater
before returning permanently in May 1997 to The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago in the
same capacity.
