Education-Outreach Program

The Joffrey’s Education-Outreach Program is an important asset in our efforts to increase appreciation and awareness of dance throughout the wider community and to build larger audiences. The Education-Outreach Program is coordinated by Pierre Lockett, a recently retired Joffrey dancer. Pierre has devoted much of his life to dance, having been a member of The Joffrey for 20 years, after eight years with Dance Theatre of Harlem.

The Middle School Dance Clubs
Our flagship program, the Middle School Dance Clubs (MSDC) works with 400 students in 10 Chicago Public Schools in a bi-monthly classroom learning and dance education workshop program. Participating students and their teachers learn about ballet and attend Joffrey performances during the school year, while creating their own dance pieces. The yearlong program culminates in a two-week residency program, the Spring Intensive, which features student performances in each of the participating schools. The young people perform both their creations and actual Joffrey ballets adapted for their needs and taught to them by teams of Joffrey dancers. To date, more than 3,000 Chicago youth have directly participated in the MSDC with thousands more having attended Joffrey and in-school performances associated with the program.

Dancing in the Parks
Now in its pilot stage at Tuley Park in the Chatham neighborhood on the Far South Side, this Program is a new partnership with the Chicago Park District (CPD) to build on and enrich the dance programs available through CPD cultural centers and other facilities. Consisting of a beginners and advanced sections, in two five-week sessions, the Program is targeted to neighborhoods without other dance learning opportunities to offer local youth the opportunity to pursue interest in dance outside of the school day

Special Projects
The Joffrey welcomes opportunities to present special dance-learning opportunities and performances, such as the Water Ballet classes held at two Chicago Park District outdoor facilities (Tuley Park in the Chatham neighborhood and Holstein Park in Bucktown) during the summer of 2003.

The Nutcracker Children’s Ballet Corps
Every year, approximately 150 young people form an important part of The Nutcracker, our annual Holiday Program and perennial favorite for audiences of all ages. Drawn from ballet schools, dance academies, and individually from throughout Chicagoland, the rotating casts of children fill a number of onstage roles during this large-scale production. The Joffrey is pleased that 10% of the Nutcracker Children’s Corps members to-date have come from the Middle School Dance Clubs Program, and we hope to increase that number over the next several years. The young people performing in The Nutcracker are led by Children’s Ballet Mistress, Carla Graham White.

The Joffrey’s Education-Outreach offerings enable children to understand and appreciate dance as an artistic expression they can both enjoy and perform. These dance-education opportunities help students to be healthier and happier through gaining new understanding of their own capabilities and interests. Encouraging young people to see that ballet is an art form accessible to people of all ages, from all cultural backgrounds, also helps to foster a sense of how dance can help bridge differences between communities and people.
