“We wanted to celebrate the success of the film here in Chicago by showcasing, live, several of the works seen in this splendid film,” said Joffrey Founder and Artistic Director Gerald Arpino. The new THE COMPANY: Favorites program will capitalize on the film’s popularity while maintaining much of the originally scheduled Founders Favorites program.
The four works which were
captured in “THE COMPANY” are:
- Tensile Involvement, Alwin Nikolais’ striking 1953 dance theater piece utilizing enormous elastic ribbons to create a geometric framework, which opened the film.
- White Widow, the haunting 1990 Moses Pendleton creation performed by a solo dancer on a swing to a score by Angelo Badalamenti, David Lynch and Julee Cruise.
- Creative Force, a 1999 piece of red hot pairings and sizzling energy by contemporary choreographer Laura Dean.
- Light Rain, the company’s sensual signature work, will close the season. It will be performed only once, at May 16th’s Sunday matinee.
Also on THE COMPANY: Favorites program will be Robert Joffrey’s Pas Des Déesses and Arpino’s Valentine, and the World Premiere of his Pas de Deux, Ruth Ricordi: per Due, as originally scheduled.
“THE COMPANY” (Sony Pictures Classics), a look at the world of ballet as only Altman could envision it, opened to 3.5 star reviews on Christmas Day 2003 from both Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun Times) and Michael Wilmington (Chicago Tribune). The authenticity and richness of “THE COMPANY” is rooted in the unprecedented way in which Altman shot the film: with the complete cooperation of The Joffrey Ballet. Neve Campbell, who stars in “THE COMPANY,” initiated the project with screenwriter Barbara Turner (“Pollack,” “Georgia”), who spent over two years with The Joffrey, observing and writing. Joffrey dancers constitute the core of Altman’s ensemble.
