The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago is named after one of its two founders. Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino started The Joffrey Ballet in 1956. From its beginning it brought a new American approach to ballet. The company began with six dancers who toured the country in a station wagon. Every day they drove to a new city to perform ballets created by Robert Joffrey. The company grew and became one of the world’s leading ballet companies. It has performed in all fifty states and around the world. After Mr. Joffrey’s death in 1988, Gerald Arpino became its Artistic Director. He is also the choreographer of one third of the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago’s original ballets. There are more than 225 ballets by 85 choreographers in the repertoire. In 1995 Mr. Arpino established The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago to carry on the traditions and legacy of The Joffrey Ballet. It is a world-famous ballet company that now calls Chicago home. |

Mr. A, as he is known to many, co-founded the company with Robert Joffrey in 1956. As Artistic Director of the ballet company, he selects the dancers, decides which ballets will be performed, and is responsible for all artistic choices. Mr. A was a leading dancer in the company in 1961. Since then, as its main choreographer, he has created ballets on such a wide variety of themes and ideas that it is hard to believe that one person could have choreographed them all.
In 1974, Mr. Arpino was awarded the DanceMagazine Award. The citation on it reads “To Gerald Arpino — More than any other choreographer, he has recognized the spirit of the times. His work speaks clearly of the anguish and joy of being young in America today.” Mr. Arpino’s works appear on nearly every program performed by The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. His ballets have explosive energy, theatricality and fluidity. Mr. Arpino has made a unique contribution to ballet by introducing a dance style that blends modern movements with classical ballet. His works can be credited with giving the company the style for which it has become famous.
