Mauro Villanueva, a born-and-raised Texan, began his dance training in San Antonio, first with Shawn Knife and then with Buddy and Susan Treviño. He participated in the Joffrey Summer Workshop in San Antonio in 1996, 1997, and 1998.

After spending two years dancing with the Nutmeg Ballet in Torrington, Connecticut, Mauro apprenticed with the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago in August 2000. He was promoted to full company member in the fall of 2002.

Since joining, Mauro has danced many roles with the Joffrey, including parts in The Nutcracker, The Taming of the Shrew, Les Présages, Le Sacre du Printemps, and Strange Prisoners.
