This program celebrates the 100th birthday of George Balanchine and Ravinia Park.
Balanchine had a long association with both Ravinia and The Joffrey. His own New York City Ballet was the first resident ballet company of Ravinia (1959-1972), followed by The Joffrey Ballet (1972-1979). Balanchine was extremely generous to Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino in the early years of The Joffrey, giving them a number of his ballets-sometimes donating sets and costumes, and on occasion, even coaching the ballets.
The Joffrey Ballet commemorates the centennial by bringing three of Balanchine’s ballets back to the stage (designed by Balanchine himself) of the Ravinia Park Pavilion. This program marks the Ravinia premiere of Balanchine’s Square Dance.
