In The Night
by Jerome Robbins, music by Frederic Chopin This ballet by dance favorite Robbins features three couples, in varying stages of relationships, who eventually meet in a dance for six. We see each couple’s story told alone and with the group.

World Premiere
by Edwaard Liang
A world premiere by New York City Ballet soloist turned choreographer, who has been named among “Top 25 to Watch” by Dance Magazine.

Postcards
by Robert Joffrey, music by Erik Satie
We will present Postcards in honor of the 20th anniversary of our co-founder’s death. This ballet, which has not been seen by audiences in over 30 years, combines popular art with a personal intimacy.

by Bronislava Nijinska, music by Igor Stravinsky Les Noces romanticizes the timeless ritual of wedding preparations by a bride and groom.

Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring)
by Vaslav Nijinsky, reconstructed and staged by Millicent Hodson, music by Igor Stravinsky The Rite of Spring today stands as one of the magnificent musical and dance masterpieces of the twentieth century. Always a favorite in Chicago.

Kettentanz
by Gerald Arpino, music by Johann Strauss, Sr. and Johann Mayer Gerald Arpino’s salute to the Old Vienna inspired by The Joffrey’s acclaimed visit to Vienna in 1969. This lovely ballet is filled with Viennese style dances - polkas, galops and waltzes.

Carousel (A Dance)
by Christopher Wheeldon, music by Richard Rodgers. This salute to Richard Rodgers (of Rodgers and Hammerstein fame) uses the music of the composer’s melodic and evocative "Carousel Waltz" and "If I Loved You." Dancing in front of the outline of a ferris wheel, the circular movement of carnival rides and their cheerful colors are echoed in the choreography and costumes.

The Joffrey Ballet Announces the 2008-2009 SEASON

This diverse season of programming honors both Jerome Robbins and Robert Joffrey, two great contributors to American dance, and salutes Ballet Russes in its centennial year. We look forward to the young talent that is emerging in America today, such as Edwaard Liang and Christopher Wheeldon, whose contribution is vital to the future of ballet.

I am very proud to be a part of The Joffery Ballet and it is my hope that you will enjoy this exciting repertoire danced at the highest possible level by this truly wonderful company.
